TIPS TO SAVE MONEY GROCERY SHOPPING

There is no doubt that just simply living has become more challenging and expensive, everything seems to be double or triple the cost it was a few years ago.

There is also a misconception that eating healthy means you need to spend more at the grocery store, which is just not true (unless you are listening to men on tiktok who go around the grocery store aisles shirtless telling you that everything in our food system is toxic, but I digress).

Now unless you enjoy spending an entire paycheck at the store, here are some tips to help you save some cash.

TIPS TO SAVE $$$ GROCERY SHOPPINg

  • Purchase seasonally, typically this is more cost effective because these crops are in more abundance. They also taste better too! (Check out the USDAs Seasonal Produce Guide)

  • Check what you already have & make a list. Take inventory of what is in your pantry so you avoid unnecessary purchases.

  • Buy generic when possible. Most often there are minimal differences between generic brands and name brands, other than a price markup.

  • Take advantage of curbside pickup if you feel you will stray from your original list and overspend.

  • Buy in bulk. If you have a Cotsco, BJ’s or Sam’s Club membership take advantage of them!

Opt for Frozen: more often than not frozen produce is cheaper than fresh.

  • Sign up for loyalty or rewards programs, most grocery stores have these programs that offer sales, points, or rewards.

  • Shop at multiple stores, sometimes different stores are better for different items. For example: Aldi is great for produce, but maybe doesn’t offer some other items you may need.

  • Avoid shopping when hungry, which is not always doable, but it can be really helpful to not shop when your stomach is growling so you don't buy everything that looks good.

  • Plan meals ahead of time. This doesn't mean you need to plan every single thing you eat for the week, but having a few meal ideas can help give you some direction and keep your lists small.
